THE BURIAL
The minister meets the procession at the gate of the cemetery, and says: Blessed
be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!
By His mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the
resurrection of Jesus Christ from thee dead.
1 Pet. 1: 3 As the body is taken to the grave, the minister says sentences from the Bible, such as thee following: Christ
has been raised from the dead, thee first fruits of those who have fallen
asleep. For as by a man came
death, by a man has come also the
resurrection of the dead. For as
in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. 1 Cor. 15: 20-22 Fear
not, says the Lord; I am the
first and the last, and thee living one; I died, and behold I am alive for
evermore. Rev. 1: 17, 18 Even
though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for
Thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.
Ps. 23: 4 At the graveside the minister says: Let
us pray O
Lord Jesus Christ, who didst rest in a sepulcher, and didst sanctify the grave
to a bed of hope to thy people: Grant, we pray thee, that this grave may be a
resting place for thee body of thy servant, who we believe is at rest in thee;
who art the resurrection and thee life. Amen. Eternal
rest grant unto him , O Lord: And
let light perpetual shine upon him. THE COMMITTAL
While
the body is being lowered into the grave, a short lyric or hymn may be sung. Some
earth is cast upon the coffin, and the minister says: We
commend into thy hands, most merciful Father, the soul of this our brother
departed, and we commit his body to the ground, earth to earth,
ashes to ashes, dust to dust; in sure and certain hope of the resurrection in
thee last day, and thee life of the world to come; through our Lord Jesus
Christ, who shall fashion anew the body of our low estate that it may be like
unto His glorious body, according to the mighty working, whereby He is able to
subdue all things unto Himself. When the body is cremated, the minister says: We
commend into thy hands, most merciful Father, the soul of this our brother
departed, and we commit his body to thee fire; in sure and
certain hope . . .. At the burial of the ashes after cremation, he says: We
commend into thy hands, most merciful Father, the soul of this our brother
departed, and we commit his ashes to the ground; in sure and certain hope . .
.. The Lord’s Prayer may be said by all. Then is said: Thou
art the King of glory, O Christ: Thou
art the everlasting Son of the father. We
therefore pray thee, help thy servants, whom thou hast redeemed with thy
precious blood: Make
them to be numbered with thy saints, in glory everlasting. Lord,
now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For
mine eyes have seen thy salvation.
Luke 2: 29, 30 I
heard a voice from heaven saying, ‘ Write this: Blessed are the dead who die
in the Lord henceforth’. ‘Blessed indeed,’ says the Spirit, ‘that they
may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!’
The minister says this blessing: NOW
may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great
Shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with
everything good that you may do His will, working in you that which is
pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and
ever. Amen. Heb. 13: 20, 21
