A lyric or hymn is sung.  If the service is held in the house, the minister and people gather in the place where the body lies, and the minister reads some or all of the following sentences.  If the service is held in the church, the sentences may be read while the body is carried into the church.

BLESSED be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 2 Cor. 1: 3, 4

Thou dost show me the path of life; in thy presence there is fullness of joy, in thy right hand are pleasures for evermore.   Ps. 16: 11

His favor is for a lifetime.  Weeping may tarry for thee night, but joy comes with the morning. Ps. 30:5

Jesus said: ‘I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he dies, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die’.   John 11: 25, 26

Because I live, you will live also.   John 14: 19

Truly, truly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.                        John 5: 25

At the burial of a child, the following may be used:

He will feed his flock like a shepherd, he will gather the lambs in His arms, He will carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.                             Isaiah. 40:11

Jesus said: ‘It is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.  For I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven’. Matt. 18:14, 10

One or more of the following psalms1 are said or sung:

Psalm 90

LORD, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting thou art God.

Thou turnest man back to the dust, And sayest, ‘Turn back, O children of men!’

For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night.

Thou dost sweep men away; they are like a dream, like grass which is renewed in the morning:

In the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers.

For we are consumed by thy anger; by thy wrath we are overwhelmed.

Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.

For all our days pass away under thy wrath, our years come to an end like a sigh.

The years of our life are threescore and ten, or even by reason of strength fourscore; Yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away.

Who considers the power of thy anger, and thy wrath according to the fear of thee?

So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.

Return, O Lord! How long? Have pity on thy servants!

Satisfy us in the morning with thy steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

Make us glad as many days as thou hast afflicted us, and as many years as we have seen evil.

Let thy work be manifest to thy servants, and thy glorious power to their children.

Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish thou the work of our hands upon us, yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

Glory be to the Father: and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end.  Amen,

Psalm 130

OUT of the depths I cry to thee, O Lord! Lord,

Hear my voice! Let thy ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications!

If thou, O Lord, shouldst mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand?

But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His word I hope;

My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.

O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with Him is plenteous redemption.

And He will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

Glory be to the Father: and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end.  Amen,

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want;

He makes me lie down in the green pastures. He leads me beside still waters;

He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, They comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me In the presence of my enemies; Thou anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Glory be to the Father: and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end.  Amen,

One or more of the following passages of Scripture are read:

1 Corinthians 15: 20-28 and 35-58.

Revelation 7: 9-17 and 21: 1-7.

A short address may be given here, and after it the minister says:

The Lord be with you:

And with thy spirit.

Let us pray :

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come;  Thy will be done; In earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread;  And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us;  And lead us not into temptation,  But deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, The power and the glory,  For ever and ever.  Amen.

Minister: Let us commend our brother departed to God.

The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God:

And no torment will ever touch them.     Wisdom 3:1

Let us pray

ALMIGHTY God, with whom do live the spirits of them that depart hence in the Lord, and with whom the souls of the faithful are in joy and felicity: We commend into thy hands the soul of this our brother; trusting that thou wilt bring him into sure consolation and rest.  Grant, we beseech thee, that at the day of Judgment he and all his people, departed out of this life, may with us, and we with them, fully receive thy promises, and be made perfect; through thee glorious resurrection of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Let us pray for those who mourn.

Blessed are those who mourn.

For they shall be comforted.       Matt. 5: 4

Let us pray

Father of mercies and God of all comforts: Look in thy tender love and pity, we beseech thee, on thy sorrowing servants.  Be thou to them their refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble; make them to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge; who by death hath conquered death, and by rising again hath opened the gates of everlasting life; even Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Let us pray for faith and hope.

I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord:

In the land of the living.                Ps. 27: 13

Let us pray

O HEAVENLY Father, who in thy Son Jesus Christ hast given us a true faith, and a sure hope: Help us, we pray thee, to live as those who believe and trust in the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, and the resurrection to life everlasting; and strengthen this faith and hope in us all the days of our life; through thy Son Jesus Christ.  Amen.

And now, in sure and steadfast hope, let us declare our faith:

I believe in God the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth:

     And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried, He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead, He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty;   From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

     I believe in the Holy Spirit; The holy catholic Church; The Communion of Saints:  The Forgiveness of sins;  The Resurrection of the body; And the Life everlasting. Amen.

The people may sing a lyric or hymn.

The minister and people say together:

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all.  Amen.

As the body is taken from the church or house, the people sing.
